Mount Barker serves a wide agriculture area and is the administrative centre of the Shire of Plantagenet.
Not so long ago the area was notable for apples but today the emphasis is on sheep and cattle. Vineyards are also now a feature and table wines produced have won prizes throughout Australia. The civic buildings are set in pleasant gardens. The library and adjoining art gallery contain a collection of original paintings donated by the late Sir Claude Hotchin. Mt. Barker is an ideal holiday centre with accommodation for every taste with ample shopping and recreational facilities and beautiful scenic surrounds.
