General: Although Katanning celebrated its centenary in 1989, the first settlers arrived in the district in 1860. Today Katanning is a thriving centre providing goods and services to residents in the town and surrounding district. For geographical and commercial reasons, it is generally regarded the centre of the Great Southern Region. Katanning is home to many people from Christmas Island who settled in the area after finding work at the local Metro Meat abattoir. Meat at the abattoir is slaughtered according to the Halal procedures to enable sale to markets in the Middle East.
